A Strange Story - Complete - edition by Baron Edward Bulwer Lytton. Reference eBooks @ . Reviews

There are a lot of interesting elements in this tale of the supernatural, in which a materialist physician finds himself plagued by occult forces. And in the end, it works itself to a climax that is, while not exactly great, not bad either. But the plot keeps being interrupted by monologues, speeches, and lectures, on various religious, scientific, pseudoscientific and occult topics. These topics obviously fascinated Bulwer-Lytton, and for all I know may fascinate you too. But it was not so for me. It often seems that he hopes you will take his lectures seriously, even if you cannot suspend disbelief in his fictions. Moreover, these goals are not in good harmony. For those who merely want to suspend disbelief, and get on with a spooky story, these lectures only get in the way.

The female love interest is about as passive a creature as I have ever seen, even in a Victorian novel. Her paranormal abilities keep being mentioned, but you would have need a microscope to detect any effect the exercise of those powers have to the plot of the story. Instead, these paranormal powers become a sort of maguffin (if that's the right word) for the villain to pursue.

One idea explored here is that materialism may make a person (such as the protagonist) psychologically vulnerable to occult forces (real or imagined). As I recall, G.K. Chesterton explored a similar idea more effectively in his "Father Brown" stories. But he may have borrowed the idea from Bulwer-Lytton, so perhaps we must give credit where due.

This is a review of the complete novel, and not of any particular edition of it.
fantastic! I love Lytton
very well written, excellent occult writer with sinister magnetism of the Gothic guide of what drives a madman to murder. Well written...His best book is "Zanoni"...the immortal man. Endora
Long book - originally published weekly as a serial. I recommend if you are going to read it, to do so in a short amount of time. If you pick it up and put it down, you can get lost.
The premise of the story is kind of interesting, but I have never read another author who can say so little in so many words. Some of his sentences must be hundreds of words long. They go on, and on, and on........... I did make it through the book to the end, but I did a LOT of skimming.
great
