Pat Dennis is an award-wining author and comedian. The stories are a bit contrived, but kept my attention. I've tried a some of the hotdish recipes with mixed results. It makes a great little gift for the person who's moved out of Minnesota or Iowa to toward either of the coasts. Again, the recipes are OK at best. Once trying, one will find that adjustments need to be made. The short stories are the jewel to this book as many of them are written in a detective-crime-film noir format, but don't expect to dwell upon them.Product details

This book is a series of short stories that pack quite a wallop. They each have a hotdish in it, but, the stories vary with each one. The ends are surprising. I sat here thinking Oh my Gosh. I was sad to see it end.
I would describe the stories in this book as anecdotes, not short stories. The recipes? I'm not tempted to try any of them.
Witty, creative and even suspenceful, a unique blend of comedy and mystery. I have bought it for myself and as gifts. I highly recommend this book and others by this author.
I haven't read short stories for a long time. It was fun reading this selection for a change. Would recommend this to anyone looking for a fast, light read.
All the short stories were great. Pat Dennis is an excellent author. Loved her Fat in Vegas book also and her Betty Chance series.
Loved this book. It is a nice, quick read and the small stories make it an even better read. Wonderful Murder Mysteries with humor mixed in, and of course who can pass up the awesome recipes in the back? As a former Minnesotan I can totally relate to the whole hotdish theme (although I honestly never thought to use them as possible murder weapons!)

In the preliminary "unofficial guide" to "the hotdish mystery," the author explains to auslanders that hotdish is (1) midwestern colloquialism for a hot entrée that is similar to a French casserole except that it is often inedible; (2) the [illegitimate - sounds like "custard"] offspring of canned cream of mushroom soup. (Actually - any creamed soup will do - cream of chicken, cream of celery - etc.) These quick, clever mysteries all involve - in varying manner - our beloved, ubiquitous hotdish. Also included are 18 delectable looking hotdish recipes to make the Dr. Atkins carb police cry. The book is a celebration of the triumph over our legislature's misguided assault on hotdish. (Those silly people down in St. Paul tried to BAN HOTDISH at communal gatherings - uttering some annihilistic balderdash about public health concerns and the absence of USDA labeling.)
